Meet Feeding the Accelerator’s Food Tech Startups

The USA Pavilion at Expo Milano announced its food business incubator Feeding the Accelerator in March, 2015 at the first international food tech conference and expo Seeds&Chips. Yesterday, at a press conference at EXPO Milano in Milan, the program unveiled 10 startups from around the world that have been accepted into the program (list below).

Feeding the Accelerator is curated by AtelierSlice and Microsoft in partnership with FedEx, PepsiCo, Illy and Copernico. The three month program will offer its selected startups mentorship, workshops, lectures and networking support. It aims to “create synergies between an entire ecosystem of disciplines around food,” reads its press release.

Five out of the ten participating startups pitched at the Seeds&Chips pitch competition in March. They include Mintscraps, Pnat, Cookbooth, Ice Dreams and GreenOnyx. “We are very happy to collaborate with the USA Pavilion and Microsoft and support these wonderful projects,” Seeds&Chips producer Marco Gualtieri tells us. “We are proud…of this wonderful achievement and look forward to next year (May 11-14, 2016) [the 2nd annual Seeds&Chips] when the magic will happen all over again.”

Feeding the Accelerator Startups

• Pnat: new ways of farming through modular floating greenhouses which will allow for intensive cultivation (Italy)

• Microvita: an alternative, sustainable animal feed which does not compete with human feeding through an efficient industrial system that converts organic by-products into protein feed for livestock using house flies (Italy)

• Ice Dreams: a revolutionary way to produce artisanal Italian gelato that substitutes traditional ingredients such as milk, eggs, and artificial additives, requiring only water (Italy)

• FoodTrace: new tools for the wholesale marketplace to help farmers and artisans sell more efficiently to more informed and targeted buyers through a cloud-based software platform (US)

• Cookbooth: the future of the cookbook through an accessible self-publishing tool that will allow professional and amateur chefs alike document, share, and monetize their knowledge, experimentations, and techniques (UK/Spain)

• Kalulu: develops shorter supply chains that connect farmers directly to local consumers, reducing carbon footprints, and increasing the involvement of farmers in their communities (Italy)

• Urban Pastoral: develops collectives of integrated food and agricultural businesses, that understand food as a vehicle for social, economic, and environmental progress (US)

• GREEN ONYX: develops a smart-home appliance designed for urban settings which delivers “just picked fresh” super vegetables at a-press-of-a-button (Israel)

• Ignitia: provides a highly accurate location specific weather forecast technology which improves farmers’ everyday decision making in remote areas of West Africa by SMS (US/Sweden)

• MintScraps: an online platform that helps businesses throughout the food supply chain manage food waste with analytical data to help save thousands of dollars in monthly food purchasing and waste disposal costs (US)
