Over the past few months, our Millennial Innovators Uprooting Our Food System series has profiled the bright, creative and driven university students from around the world that make up Thought For Food (TFF), a next generation food innovation platform and annual challenge that empowers its global community to develop breakthrough solutions to feed nine billion people by 2050.

This year, the TFF Challenge was more intense than ever. With participation from 400+ incredibly diverse and brilliant teams from over 100 countries, the judges were tasked with selecting the ten teams below as the 2015/16 TFF Challenge Finalists.

Each of these Finalist teams receive mentorship and take part in the TFF Bootcamp before pitching live on stage at the Thought For Food Global Summit, April 1-2 in Zurich, Switzerland for the chance to win up to $15k in seed funding.

Meet the 2015/16 Thought For Food Challenge Finalists

Ag For Hire  – U.S.

Ag For Hire developed a labor recruitment application that improves farmers’ access to seasonal and specialty labor, and that empowers farm laborers.

Agrosmart – Brazil

The Agrosmart monitoring systems tracks more than 10 environmental conditions, allowing growers to have relevant data for better decision-making regarding irrigation, crop development, diseases and pests.

B-Box – India

B-Box is a low cost beehive, outfitted with a number of sensors, which allow for large-scale collection of bee data, and help beekeepers maintain a healthy and happy hive.

Biteback – Indonesia

Biteback Mineral Oil is an alternative, nutrient-dense replacement of traditional cooking oil made from edible insects, which additionally aims to decrease  deforestation around the world. 

Econoodle – Indonesia

EcoNoodle brings cassava grown by smallholder farmers into the mainstream market through delicious and nutritious instant noodles made from cassava flour. 

FarmAField  – USA

FarmAField’s online marketplace allows for the transparent exchange of small production contracts between everyday people and farmers to address income volatility and increase investments in agriculture. 

Fruti-Cycle – Uganda

Fruiti-Cycle’s biogas tricycle has attachable refrigeration units, allowing for farmers to generate more income from the produce they already grow and decrease post harvest losses.

Kulisha – Kenya & USA

Kulisha produces low-cost, high-quality, sustainable fish feed made from insects.

Oxmosis – United Kingdom

Oxmosis has developed a small-scale forward osmosis filter to revolutionize wastewater treatment around the world, while also creating agricultural fertilizer as a byproduct.

Peer-to-Peer Probiotics  – France

Peer-to-Peer Probiotics have created yeast and bacteria cultures that produce Iron, Vitamin A, and Vitamin B in fermented foods eaten in many cultures around the world. These vitamin rich strains can easily be shared from one household to another.
