The January Food+Tech Meetup featured a conversation about developing new models for organizing food communities and getting food to those communities, moderated by Elizabeth Mcvay Greene. Matt Hatoun of Wholeshare and Melissa Mcewen of the Meatshare Meetup discussed how they are using technology to making it easier and more efficient to facilitate group food buying.

Wholeshare is a new online market place and group buying site that helps consumers collectively purchase  wholesale orders of food directly from local farmers.

Meatshare is a Meetup group started to help people interested in purchasing locally raised, grass-fed meat coordinate group buying of  whole animals. This helps to support farmers and lower the cost of purchasing healthier, high quality meat.

Unfortunately, the first five minutes of the video got cut off. The only thing you will will miss is a basic description of each of the sites. The event brought together 45 individuals from a wide range of disciplines including technologists, people in the process of starting  food co-ops, urban farmers, food activists, and food+tech entrepreneurs. The group had an excellent conversation that explored the feasibility, as well as the potential opportunities and challenges each of these platforms provide for making  it easier to eat local and support farmers.
