In honor of National Agriculture Day (better late than never – our website had a bug yesterday) we’ve pulled together a list of incredible publications, websites and blogs that are working to transform the agriculture industry. Through news and analysis, these 11 (we added in a few more) companies are helping to inform the public and create a better future for farmers, eaters and the planet.
SeedStock provides valuable news and information that fosters the development of thriving, sustainable local food systems, and works with everyone from government agencies to private sector stakeholders to create and bolster food system innovation, entrepreneurship and investment.
Civil Eats provides a go-to resource for the “good food movement.“ It publishes daily news and commentary about our food system and works to transform the conversation around sustainable agriculture. The site’s over 100 contributors dig deep into food policy issues, profile food heroes from across the country and highlight food culture.
Modern Farm’s daily website, print quarterly and online store tell beautiful and eye-opening stories of how our food reaches our plates. The publication offers information and tools for everyone from dabbling urban gardeners, to veteran farmers, to food-conscious folks who want to learn more about the food they eat.
Food Tank, the food think tank, offers sustainable solutions to the biggest environmental and social challenges facing our food system. Through its website, Food Tank facilitates collaboration between farmers, producers, policy makers, government leaders, scientists and journalists, and promotes best practices to the food and agriculture communities.
Co-founded by a team of technologists and agriculture industry professionals, AgFunderNews offers a one-stop-shop for learning about the intersection of agriculture, finance and technology – from the innovative startups of today, to the farming practices of tomorrow.
The National Young Farmers Coalition(NYFC):
NYFC supports, mobilizes and engages young farmers and works to ensure their success. It supports independent farms, sustainable farming practices and affordable land for farmers. Its blog shares resources and tools – like Q&As, farming guides and forum recaps – that help arm new farmers for success in the field.
Managed by Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture,Virtual Grange offers an online community and hub for beginning farmers, complete with forums, technical tutorials and agricultural news. The Grange aggregates upcoming conferences, workshops and apprenticeship opportunities for new farmers and provides an avenue form them to seek advice from experienced farmers.
Grist provides intelligent, irreverent environmental news and commentary on climate, energy, food, green living and more. The site reaches more than 2 million people a month and aims to get them to talking, thinking and taking action to create a better future for the planet.
Switchboard, the staff blog of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), features thought-provoking, and impassioned commentary on today’s most important environmental issues, written by scientists, lawyers, policy analysts, media hounds and other specialists.
Ecocentric, GRACE Communications Foundation’s blog, share stories and commentary about critical food, water and energy issues. It strives to increase public awareness of the environmental and public health implications of our current food system and works to promote a more sustainable future.
The Food & Environment Reporting Network (FERN)
FERN is an independent, non-profit news organization that produces investigative reporting on food, agriculture, and environmental health. Its stories reveal corruption, abuse of power, and exploitation wherever it happens, and strive to give a voice to the voiceless to catalyze change.
