I’ve been a pescatarian for 17 years. This past year I made the decision to try my best to eat only sustainably grown and sourced seafood. While there were a number of reasons behind this decision- mostly I don’t want to contribute to overfishing or habitat destruction, and I don’t want to consume potentially heavy metal rich food. Sadly- that meant I basically stopped eating fish.
Which is why I am REALLY excited about Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch guide’s newly added feature to their iPhone app- Project FishMap.
Project FishMap uses is crowdsourcing to develop a database of restaurants and markets that have sustainable seafood, along with details about how each item is fished or farmed. Additionally, the app features regional fish guides, recommendations for what fishes should be avoided, a sushi guide, and sorting by common market names. Download the app and start contributing!
